One of the well preserved sites you must see in Rome. The Pantheon has been converted into a Church after the age of Roman Empire. It was a pagan temple before the coming of Christians. It became a Church after Christians had their rights recognized.
The columns were builded with a granite taken away from an Egyptian temple. The opened oculus on the top is the only source of light. There are small holes in the ground through which rainwater is gathered.
The structure of the temple inspired Michelangelo for the dome of St. Peter. The building houses the tombs of the artist Raphael and of the Itlay’s kings Vittorio Emmanuele II and Umberto I, who ruled our country at the times of monarchy which was abolished in Italy in 1948.
We are fond of informing you the entrance is out of charge and taking pictures inside is allowed. It is not illuminated when outside is dark so try to not go there too late in winter time.
It faces on a piazza which is very attractive. A couple of expensive restaurants and a McDonalds are at one of the side.
We suggest to sit and have a quick meal on the little steps surrounding the fountain and the obelisk which are placed on the center of the square. There is no traffic all around and kids can play without any disturbance.
