The huge church of The Frari- the Brothers- dates from the 15th century, and was founded by the Franciscans. It contains some very important works of art. Firstly, on the high altar, Titian's Assumption, which is quite magnificent. Secondly, a startling statue of John the Baptist by Donatello. Thirdly, a beautiful altarpiece of the Madonna with Saints by Venetian master Giovanni Bellini. As if this were not enough, you can also see the simple grave of composer Claudi Monteverdi, admire the outstanding carvings on the choir-stalls, and also admire the monuments to Titian and Canova, two of Venice's finest.
