The new Ara Pacis Museum, designed by the international architect Richard Meier, opened in the spring of 2006. The Ara Pacis Museum rises between a roadway that runs along the Tiber and the enormous ancient mausoleum of Augustus several yards below. Originally It was commissioned by the Roman Senate on 4 July 13 BC to honor the Roman emperor Augustus, and was consecrated on 30 January 9 BC by the Senate to celebrate the peace established in the Empire after Augustus’s victories. Nowadays, it houses also exhibition and events.
